Reflection #1

This week’s assignments went well; I understood what I was doing. I read the chapters and when I took the test I missed a few. When I looked at it to take notes it was little things that I missed. I think I was losing focus or what not but I felt like I knew and understood why I missed what I missed. The chapter 1-5 test was a little challenging but I got through it alright. I just finished taking reading 091 this summer so a lot of things in the first few chapters were still fresh in my memory; I think that helped a little with the beginning. I still cannot figure out how to send you my stuff. I am working hard to figure it out. I am not a fan of this website only because I do not understand it. I think when and if I do get the hang of it I will enjoy it better. It is getting really frustrating because I feel like I am the only one that is not getting it still. And I apologize that I do not understand it, but I really am trying to figure it out.

Learning Data

It is important to be able to connect and understand what a cartoon is trying to say. The cartoon that is on page 430 is about the immigration. When the pilgrims’ came to America they did not have documentation. When people from other countries come to America they need proof of documentation. It is about breaking through to a different time. Why is it that once our country gets older we get stricter? Being able to look at a cartoon and get the underline message spreads. A cartoon can say a message that people are not willing to say. After this chapter I feel like I understand how to find a hidden message better. I understand the argument behind the message. I feel better about my ability to read behind the message now than before. There was a lot of information that I learned in this chapter.

Understanding an inference helps you to become a critical reader

Understanding inferences helps to understand a photo. When you look at a photo like the one on page 186 there is more to the picture then just the old lady. There is a story there is information behind it all. When looking at the picture not knowing the story or the background you can make judgments. The lady is old, is she sick,, is she happy, does she have family, is she alone, etc. all these questions that we can assume with out knowing her history. When we know the meaning behind the picture we can sometimes relate and understand what the picture means that much more. On the website where the picture is from we now know that she is from Alaska, she was part of a tribe. Her house was a structure that was simple. At the rear of the house is where the sacred treasures were held. Know the history helps to get an inside look of this woman’s life and how she lived.

Reflection #2

In the past week I have learned a lot, more then I though I was going to. When I look at a photo or a cartoon I do not pay to much attention to it. I normally would just say “that’s a pretty picture, or a sad picture.” When I look at a cartoon I read what is said but I do not read into it. After this week when I look at a picture I try to think where the person is coming from, what is the meaning behind the picture or the person in the picture. When I look at a cartoon I can figure out the hidden message. It is important to know these things in everyday life not just when you are looking at a photo or cartoon for class. My issue is American hunger, I volunteered at St. Mary’s Food Bank, there are food banks all around the country to help families in need. They help families by having food available for them that is cheap. The food banks get food that is donated from stores, the food is sometimes expired and is rotting. The stores donates things that people do not buy from the bakery, the cans that are going bad. The food banks give these foods to the families that need help. The food banks need quality food for these families. In my survey 45 percent said that there are more families that are hungry in the west coast. 40 percent of people say that the families that are hungry on the east coast. 15 percent say that families are more hungry in the mid-west. I do not think that my survey was credible because I only surveyed 20 people. I could redo my survey and find out what other people think to make it credible.

Public Advertisement

Advertisement is filled with appeal. Appeal helps draw un into what is being advertised. Appeal is “something that makes an argument attractive, worth considering, or plausible. They can be legitimate or illegitimate” (page 349) Appeal to authority allows the claim to rely on the facts. Appeal to fear is about arousing the idea of what will or will not happen. Appeal to patriotism is that the argument is worth fighting for. Appeal to sympathy or pity is we hold back our judgment for those who are sad. Appeal to tradition is when we accept a practice that has been around for so long. It was interesting to see what was behind the ad what some people would say.

Language and Its Effects on the Reader

This section was to know the right way to uses language effectively. Figurative language or figures of speech is language that is not its literal meaning, the types of figurative language are metaphor, simile, and personification (page 196-197). A metaphor is a direct and imaginative comparison. Simile is a comparison using “like” or “as”. Personification is a comparison with something that is nonliving being described as if it were human. I got a better understanding of clichés and jargon. An example of cliché is “as rich as Croesus” (211). A cliché is a stereotype, a phase that is used. Jargon is used to make the author sound more intelligent. Political correct language drew my attention, the misuse of some words. Politically correct language is increasing sensitivity to diversity in the country (215). An example for members of minority groups would be “people of color, emergent groups” (216). Another example for handicap would be “physically challenged” (216).I understand witty better. Witty is a tone the reveals the writer’s mental sense of playfulness. And example is “Ambrose Bierce, nineteenth-century American writer: ‘War is Gods way of teaching Americans about geography’” (258). I found this one funny, although war is not funny, but it has a little humor to it. What makes it witty is way of teaching. I learned a lot but these are what really caught my attention. I had fun learning about witty. I knew about figurative language from previous classes. Witty was my favorite though.

Reflection #3

In the third week I learned how to analyze an advertisement, editorials, the language that effects the reader, and famous speeches. When analyzing an advertisement you first need to know who the intended audience is. There are different appeals that are applied with this week. Appeal to authority, fear, patriotism. pity or sympathy, prejudice, and tradition. (350-352) The one that appeals to me more was the appeal to fear. “It arouses fear about what will happen if we adopt a certain course.” (350) It appealed to me because in the book it talks about war as an example. It really hit home I have family and friends like every one that is over seas. Also the appeal to pity or sympathy “suspend our critical judgment because we pity a victim of sad circumstances or because we can identify with someone else’s trouble.”(351) I already know the figurative language, but the part about connotation and synonyms through me off a little. As I mentioned before witty appealed to me. I always had an idea of what allusion was but the definition allowed me to explain it better. “An allusion is a pointed and meaningful reference to something outside the text, which helps illuminates the subject.” (266) Bias I can relate to a lot, I am bias on the field. And when I believe in something I am bias whether it is right or it is wrong. I also enjoyed evaluating famous speeches. I did now anything about Lou Gehrig that was interesting to find out. For him to say he was the luckiest man alive and everyone back him up was amazing. When someone has to walk away from something they love it is very emotional. I did not realize how motivating Martin Luther King Jr’s speech really was. When I was looking for my own speech on my issue I found it hard to find one. Instead I found a lot of videos on how to prevent hunger but nothing that are talking about it in a speech. Those videos really put it into perspective just how bad things really are I other countries. I learned a lot this week.

Final Reflection

This class went by fast I blinked and it is over. Over these past
few weeks I have learned a lot from taking the chapter test and figuring out
what we knew and what we did not know. When I did not get the right answer I
had to figure out what I did wrong and corrected it to get 100 percent. By going
back and figuring out what I did wrong helped me to remember it and retain the
information. Although I had problems with some of the chapters I managed to
figure them out. When we moved into the data I knew a little about looking into
cartoons, pictures and advertisements. When we got into it deeper I understood
it better. When looking at a cartoon the cartoonist has a message in there. When
a cartoonist starts his cartoon he/she thinks of the message carefully. When we
look at a picture we think of only the things that we see. When we know the
history we are able to put ourselves in their shoes and know why they are
really like it. The picture from the website on page 186 was able to tell us the
history behind the picture and was able to understand. An advertisement has
different ways to draw our attention to what they want to sell. Appeal to
sympathy and pity appealed to me more. This appeal wants us to hold off on
judging someone because they are sad from whatever circumstances. (351) When we
looked at the polls and compared it to mine it was different. The other polls
were more effective because they had a lot more people to survey their poll.
Looking at the famous speeches each speech talks about the major issue and most
speeches are written by other people that is not the speaker. (400)  a speaker knows who their intended audience is and how to adapt to the conditions. This class was not easy it was a
lot of information at you quick and was easy to get behind on. This class tested
you; it tested you but how organized you were and your time management. I have a
better understanding with all of the subjects now.
